It's National Skin Cancer Action Week, whenever the UV index is three or above, use the five forms of sun protection that are outlined below:
1) slip on sun-protective clothing
2) slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
3) slap on a broad-brimmed hat
4) seek shade
5) slide on sunglasses.
A combination of this, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk.

Isometrics are NOT a one size fits all❌
📚 Acute sensory and motor response to 45-s heavy isometric holds for the plantar flexors in patients with Achilles tendinopathy - O'Neil et al. (2018).
Aim: To explore the immediate effects of heavy isometric plantar flexor exercise on sensory output (i.e pain) in individuals with achilles tendinopathy.
Method: 16 subjects with achilles tendinopathy were tested at baseline and repeated immediately after intervention.
The intervention utilized five 45s isometric plantar contractions at 70%MVC separated by 2 min rests. All subjects were seated with the ankle positioned at 10deg of plantar flexion and knee and hip at 90deg. .
1⃣Self-reported pain during a functional task - All subjects initially completed 10 bilateral heel raises, if they were pain free ➡ 10 unilateral heel raises, if they were pain free ➡10 unilateral hops. Patients were asked to score their pain at time from 0-10.
2⃣Mechanical pressure pain threshold - The site of where it was most tender on palpation was marked and mechanical pressure sensitivity were taken
3⃣Motor Output using isokinetic dynamometry
1⃣Only 9/16 participants reported pain during their functional task (heel raise or unilateral raise or hopping) but within that group, no significant difference was found between the pre and post intervention (isometrics)
2⃣Mean mechanical pressure pain thresholds were reduced but it was non-significant pre/post intervention
3⃣Mean maximal concentric plantar torque at 90deg/sec increased significantly.
Based on this study, those who experienced pain with the functional tests, did not actually experience a statistically significant change. However, this does not mean isometrics are not effective! It merely just means that there may not be a magic bullet. This study was a good “wake up call” to those who hope to get a quick fix. It should be common sense that if someone is painful with an exercise, regress it! Don’t force them to complete 45s holds if it’s painful hoping it’d give your patient pain-relief. Follow the golden rules of load management! Modify the current load and progressively build up.

Our Physiotherapist Ben was just recently at the International Tag Federation World Cup in Coffs Harbour, where he was supporting the Australian 30’s Men’s Team. That team made history by being the first Australian team to win the division. When asked about his secret to success, Ben reported that “the Dad hat made all the difference” 🎩 #buckethat
