OnThisDay, 1915 Padma Shri, Ismat Chugtai was born.
Ismat Chughtai, one of Urdu’s most accomplished fiction writers, who epitomized the 20th-century women writers of Urdu: enlightened, bold, iconoclastic, progressive and feminist was born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh. A Self-proclaimed Liberal Muslim, Chughtai came from a family of "Hindus, Muslims, and Christians who all live peacefully". She said she read not only the Qur’an but also the Gita and the Bible with openness.
In here lifespan she played many roles like of a Progressive Writer, Film Director, Screenplay Writer, Dialogue Writer, and Producer. She made her debut as a screenwriter for Shaheed Latif's 1948 commercially successful drama film Ziddi and went on to write the dialogue and screenplay for the 1950 romance drama film Arzoo.
Her association with films solidified when she and her husband Shaheed Latif co-founded the production company Filmina.
She won many prestigious awards like Filmfare Award for best story and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1976.
With a style characterized by literary realism, Ismat Chughtai established herself as a significant voice in the Urdu literature of the twentieth century.
